phytoplankton - Comes from the Greek words phyton meaning plant and planktos meaning wondered or drifter.

They obtain their energy from the sun through photosynthesis, populating the shallows or surface waters of our seas, oceans and lakes. 

As one of the oldest organisms, they once dominated our planet's waters but today are at the bottom of the food chain. Although individually they only live for days, they multiply fast, and given the chance they can over-welm and pollute their habitat. 

Their rapid multiplication under certain conditions can lead to harmful algal blooms, which can have detrimental effects on marine life and ecosystems. These blooms are often a symptom of underlying environmental issues such as pollution, climate change, or nutrient imbalances.

Although phytoplankton may be an indicator of an imbalance they are a vital part of the ecosystem. Without them the food chain would collapse from the bottom up and there would be dramatic changes in the environment as they provide around half of the planet's oxygen.   

They may only be microscopic drifters but don’t underestimate their influence. It's a powerful reminder that even seemingly insignificant actions or changes in the environment can have far-reaching consequences. Recognizing and understanding the role of phytoplankton in the grand scheme of things underscores the interconnectedness of all life on Earth and the importance of maintaining a healthy and balanced ecosystem.
